There is no end in sight for home building in communities all across Alberta. With a population that continues to grow, the need for new homes continues to rise. With that in mind, it’s important that the industry leaders of tomorrow are educated on the homebuilding process and get a hands-on perspective of homebuilding from the foundation up. One of the programs helping achieve this is the Building Futures program; a great community initiative from Airdrie’s hometown home builder, McKee Homes. In partnership with local Airdrie and Crossfield High Schools, Building Futures introduces students to the home construction process from every angle.
In the Building Futures program, Grade 10 students work side-by-side with tradespeople for the entire school year as they build gorgeous McKee Homes, all while completing their normal workload of Grade 10 classes on-site at a McKee home. Students learn everything about what it takes to build a new home. From pre-construction, all the way to completing a beautiful home with landscaping included, students have the opportunity to engage in real-world, authentic projects that offer both a robust educational experience as well as life-relevant skills that they can carry forward with them.
The Building Futures program has recently completed their fifth year and over 160 Airdrie and area students have now been a part of the great program to date. It has grown to become one of the most popular high school educational programs in Airdrie. Through the Building Futures program, not only do students learn all about building a new home, but they can also develop their connections with the community outside of school and enhance their interpersonal skills in a truly unique environment.
Last year, students built two McKee homes in the Qualico community of Ravenswood. Upon completing the Building Futures program, students receive their Residential Construction Site Manager Level 1 accreditation, as well as completing their Grade 10 curriculum and receiving credit towards studies such as workplace safety systems (HCS) and CTS courses in construction and entrepreneurship.
Founded on quality, integrity and honesty, McKee Homes is a well known, family owned and operated home builder in Airdrie. Since its inception in 1987, McKee has operated with the mandate to supply modern homes with amazing craftsmanship and a dedication to quality. McKee recognizes that a home purchase is likely the largest purchase you will ever make and they take every small detail into consideration to ensure you get the home of your dreams.
The building Futures program has become a much sought after program across all Airdrie High Schools and with it’s first 5 years of great success, there are no signs that it will be slowing down. Each year, more than 100 students apply to be accepted into the program! In fact, the program has been so successful, that Cochrane, another city that is part of the Rocky View School District, is now implementing their own program. It’s safe to say that with so many keen students looking to get involved in this type of program, the future of home building is in great hands thanks to McKee Homes and Building Futures.
